Built around the core engine of the original Sonic Research Turbo Tuner, the MXR Turbo Tuner combines strobe-tuning precision with flexible pedalboard operation. It delivers fraction-of-a-cent accuracy and fast, zero-latency pitch tracking in a rugged MXR enclosure.

Its large strobe display responds directly to your instrument’s analogue signal, showing the actual movement of the note against a fixed reference pitch. Sharp notes rotate right, flat notes rotate left, and the pattern slows as the note approaches pitch. Four display brightness settings provide visibility across a range of lighting conditions.

Tuning Modes and Presets

The Turbo Tuner includes a Chromatic mode covering all 12 notes, along with five customisable presets.

  • Guitar mode – tracks open guitar strings and displays string numbers rather than note names
  • Bass mode – tracks open bass strings and displays string numbers
  • Three additional presets pre-loaded with:
  • Standard guitar tuning
  • Drop D tuning
  • 6-string bass tuning

Each of the five presets can be reprogrammed for instruments with up to 12 strings. Tuning offsets are adjustable by ±50 cents in 0.1-cent increments, accommodating alternate tunings and microtonal applications. An onboard USB port supports firmware updates and editor software.

Bypass Options

The default True Bypass mode mutes the output while tuning and removes the pedal from the signal path when bypassed. An internal toggle switch selects buffered bypass operation, with three buffered submodes:

  • Mute output while tuning
  • Always-on tuner with footswitch muting
  • Signal passes through while the footswitch toggles the tuner

The pedal is fitted with a heavy-duty footswitch and Sonic Research’s dedicated button design for dependable use on stage and in the studio.
