The Sunn O))) x EarthQuaker Devices HalfLife distils the acclaimed Life Pedal circuit into its most compact and pedalboard-friendly format yet. Combining distortion, analogue octave-up, and independent boost functions in a streamlined enclosure, HalfLife retains the aggressive character and flexibility that made its larger predecessors cult favourites among players chasing massive walls of gain.

The signal path runs:

Octave → Distortion → Boost

with the octave/distortion section and booster each controlled by their own dedicated footswitch, allowing them to be used independently or together.

Amplitude Distortion Circuit

The distortion section is based on the classic "White Face" distortion circuit, reworked with multiple clipping options to suit a wider variety of amplifiers, guitars, and playing styles.

Three clipping modes are available:

Asymmetrical Clipping

Two silicon diodes and one LED

Analogue Octave Up

The octave section uses a fully analogue, discrete full-wave rectifier circuit positioned at the front of the signal chain.

The Octave control gradually blends the effect into the signal, allowing everything from subtle harmonic enhancement through to heavily saturated octave fuzz textures.

An expression pedal input allows real-time control of the octave blend for dynamic performance applications.

As with most analogue octave-up circuits: - Single notes produce the strongest octave effect - Higher-register playing delivers the most pronounced results - Chords create complex and chaotic harmonic textures

At higher settings, the octave circuit transforms the pedal into a dense, fuzz-like sound reminiscent of classic octave fuzz designs.

Independent Boost

The onboard boost section sits after the distortion and octave stages and can be activated independently via its own footswitch.

This allows: - Volume boosts for solos - Additional amplifier drive - Greater saturation when pushing the front end of an amp - Flexible gain staging without additional pedals
