The dbx 117 is a self-adaptive expansion and compression noise reduction system designed to improve the usable dynamic range of tape recording without the need for level matching or pilot tones. When used with a tape deck, it can increase dynamic range by approximately 15 to 20 dB while avoiding audible harmonic, intermodulation, or transient distortion.
In addition to reducing steady tape hiss, the dbx 117 is effective at lowering modulation noise, a level-dependent artefact often heard as fuzziness on solo instruments such as voice or piano. By improving the signal-to-noise ratio at intermediate levels where modulation noise is most noticeable, the system delivers cleaner, more natural recordings. Best results are achieved by using the lowest compression-expansion ratio needed for the material, particularly for critical live recordings.
