The Yamaha SY99 is essentially a supercharged sampling workstation combined with the synthesis power of a DX-7mkII. Closely related to the SY77, it expands the concept with a larger 76-note keyboard and upgraded synthesis, sample memory, and sequencing.
At its core is a six-operator AFM engine that builds on classic Yamaha FM synthesis, matched with AWM2 sampled sounds that can be layered and fused with AFM to create complex hybrid tones. These sounds are further shaped using resonant, multi-stage Time Variant Filters, capable of everything from warm analogue-style textures to entirely new digital timbres.
The onboard sequencer allows complete song creation within the instrument, offering 16 tracks with a dedicated drum part, substantial note capacity, and support for patterns and songs. With separate polyphony for FM and sampled voices and dual digital multi-effects processors, the SY99 is a deep, professional instrument that rewards detailed sound design. It has been notably used by Vangelis and Chick Corea.
