The Bleep Drum, created by Dr. Bleep, is a unique drum machine that thrives on its lo-fi, rad-fi aesthetic, operating on an Arduino (ATmega328) platform. Initially launched between 2013 and 2016, it was first introduced for Dam Funk as the Dam Drum and subsequently rebranded as the Bleep Drum. This device offers a suite of features including four distinct sounds (two of which have pitch control), a delightfully gritty 8-bit DAC output with a ~10kHz sample rate, and options for models with or without MIDI input. It supports four sequences with 32 steps each, allows for pattern recording through direct play, and incorporates a quantizer for timing accuracy. Additional functionalities include a click track, tap tempo, reverse and noise modes, and the ability to run on a 9V battery, along with a "stereo" 1/8" output for audio.
Listening to the Bleep Drum through headphones offers an expansive stereo experience thanks to its phased stereo output, despite being fundamentally a mono signal with its phase inverted on one channel. For wider audio system integration, such as mixers, amps, or USB interfaces, a mono cable is required. Enthusiasts can also add their own sounds to the drum machine, needing just an Arduino UNO or a similar device to program the ATmega328, with a total sample storage capacity of 2 seconds. Although it supports MIDI for triggering sounds and adjusting pitches, it lacks MIDI clock capabilities due to hardware limitations. Additionally, for those interested in modular setups, the Bleep Drum can be integrated with a simple circuit design, enabling activation through modular systems.
