Launched in the mid 1970s, the SB series marked Yamaha’s move into serious electric bass design. SB600 is a hidden gem from Yamaha’s golden age. At a glance it looks a bit like a Jazz Bass, but the slightly offbeat body shape, chunky maple neck and three-ply black guard give it its own 70s swagger. The solid nato body and high-mass bridge pump out a heap of sustain.
The design borrowed cues from Fender Jazz and Precision models but with Yamaha’s distinct bridge, longer horns and dense hardware. By the late 1970s the SB line had earned a reputation for reliability and value, paving the way for later Yamaha bass icons of the 1980s.
Made in Japan at the Matsumoku plant.
