Random*Source's Paris-Flash celebrates the Serge Modular legacy by offering updated versions of several original Paperface-era slope generators, refined for modern stability and performance. While some of these circuits were later consolidated into more streamlined designs, the original modules retain a unique charm and versatility in patching due to their lower-level, individual functionality. With an abundance of slope generators, Paris-Flash can serve as a foundation for creating complete experimental voices, not just modulation or control signals.
As the name suggests, the Positive Slew and Negative Slew modules generate upward and downward voltage ramps, capable of acting as triggered voltage generators or following external input signals. Although these functions were later combined into the Dual Universal Slope Generator (DUSG), the separation of the Positive and Negative Slew has its advantages—allowing you to dedicate individual modules to tasks like clock generation without sacrificing the flexibility of another slope generator. By cascading multiple slews, complex envelope shapes and advanced timing structures can also be achieved.
Complementing the Slews is the Smooth & Stepped Generator (SSG), a core patch-programmable module in the Serge system. This two-part module consists of two lag processors—essentially Positive and Negative Slews—while the Stepped section includes an integrated sample-and-hold circuit. Depending on your patch, the SSG can function as an oscillator, LFO, envelope generator, or even a pseudo-lowpass gate. The module also features a Coupler, a comparator that outputs a high signal whenever the Stepped output exceeds the Smooth output, adding further utility and creative patching potential.
Adding even more flexibility, the Paris-Flash panel incorporates the Serge Envelope Generator, which provides triggered rise/fall envelopes. It also includes a built-in window comparator, enabling the generation of gate signals during a specific portion of the envelope’s cycle. To combine and manipulate all the slopes and gates generated throughout the panel, a streamlined version of the classic Dual CV Processor allows for scaling and mixing of control voltages.
For both audio and CV duties, the Dual Gates module delivers two versatile VCA-type circuits, ideal for signal modulation and dynamic voltage shaping. Rounding out the panel is the 1973 Filter, an iconic Paperface-era module that can shape sonic timbres with precision and also includes a balanced 1/4" output—perfect for connecting your signals to a mixer, PA system, or audio interface.
Whether you’re just beginning your journey into Serge 4U systems or looking to expand your existing setup, Paris-Flash encapsulates everything that makes the Paperface-era Serge Modular experience so spontaneous and inspiring.
