Famous for being the very first solid-body electric guitar offered by Fender in 1950, the Esquire features a single-cutaway originally designed for reaching the higher frets, an adjustable 3-saddle bridge for close enough tuning, and a lone, repurposed lap-steel pickup in the bridge position.
The Esquire laid down the law for all solid body electric guitars to follow and pre-empted its more famous successor, the Telecaster, which had absolutely nothing to do with Television! Although I think Tom Verlaine may have played one once.
Like the earliest Esquire models, the 70th Anniversary Esquire features a pine body; lightweight wood known for a punchy and complex tone (manual not required) upgraded with roasting treatment, greatly improving the resonance of the body.
Other features include a lacquer finish, thick “U”- shaped neck, Tim Shaw-designed Esquire bridge pickup (inspired by an original ’50 Esquire from Songbirds Museum in Chattanooga, TN) special anniversary neck plate and tweed case. Production of the 70th Anniversary Esquire will be limited to 2020 only. Snooze only if you wish to lose!
